Owner Report from Dog Trained

Hi Shelby,

I had a great season hunting with Tank.  He made countless retrieves and points on birds.  Unfortunately he tends to retrieve everybody's birds and brings them all back to me:).  I experienced two unusual occurrences during the season with Tank.  First, on opening weekend.

Our group was hunting a very large CRP field where I was able to be on the end of the line that was formed while the hunters all spread out.  I was able to separate myself and dogs from the next guy in the line which was nice and followed your recommendations.  Well, keep in mind that I have a GSP that I was hunting as well.  I was following the dogs when the GSP went on point, Tank backed the GSP, the bird flushed and was shot.  Tank was returning with the bird.  Here is where the unusual happened- with the bird in his mouth, Tanks pointed a different bird in the cover!  That is a first for me to see a dog on point with a bird already in his mouth!

Unfortunately the second bird was a hen and was spared, through all that, nobody else witnessed the event. In that particular field, I was able to shoot my limit by following my two dogs- points, backing, and retrieving- couldn't get much better for me.

The second occurrence was later in the season.  I was hunting with a group where the only other dog had been punctured by something in the brush and had to be kenneled the rest of the trip.  So, my two where the only dogs in the field.  Again, we were hunting a very large CRP field.  A hunter in our group had knocked a bird down that was obviously hurt and was on the run.

In comes Tank to save the day, he trailed the rooster at least 200 yards through the thickest brush in the field, finishing with a great retrieve.

It was fun to watch him work and it was great that everyone was able to see it all unfold because of the lay of the land. Many other stories but I don't want to bore you.

Tank does have his moments around the house.  He is a puppy after all.  I am seeing signs of him calming down, laying around in the shade and such.

I hope you are doing well and thanks for checking in.

Utz (Chief) first point

Shelby,

I thought I'd share this with you . . . . I introduced Utz to
pigeons this weekend at the NAVHDA training day.  He showed no
hesitation whatsoever and was really wanting to get after him.  When I
tossed it, he retrieved it right back.

On Sunday, I was helping plant birds for a few older WPG pups of guys
I've met here in northwest Arkansas.  I decided just to see how Utz
would use his nose . . . not expecting anything more than him just to
wind it and go investigate.  Well, to my pleasure, he winded it, moved
forward a little and froze at point!  The photo is actually his 2nd
planted bird.  I wasn't expecting it on the first so we didn't have a
camera ready.  On his first, he had one leg tucked up just like in
Grit's photo.

He then broke of course, which is fine with me, and charged the bird.
The bird flushed and he chased a little bit.  I'm very proud of him, as
you can imagine!

Steven

When they have completed our Level 1 program the owners will be given a handler and gun dog management seminar to assist them in correctly handling their dogs in the field and at home.
